Gifts of cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum are treated as gifts of property by the CRA. If your crypto has appreciated in value, donating it directly can eliminate capital gains tax and provide a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value.

How You Can Give:

    • Step 1: Alberta Ballet partners with a secure crypto donation processor (e.g., CanadaHelps or The Giving Block).

    • Step 2: Visit our crypto donation portal and select your coin and amount.

    • Step 3: Transfer the crypto directly to the processor’s wallet. Alberta Ballet receives the value in Canadian dollars.

    • Step 4: You receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the crypto at the time of donation.

  • If your financial institution or giving platform accepts crypto, you can make a crypto donation to your DAF and recommend a grant to Alberta Ballet.

    Tax Benefits:

    • No capital gains tax on the appreciated value of donated crypto.

    • Full charitable tax receipt issued for the fair market value.

    • Donating is generally more tax-effective than converting to cash first.

    Tip: CRA requires clear documentation and valuation. Use reputable donation platforms with automatic tax receipting to simplify your record keeping.
